Without consumer protection statutes, consumers would be at the mercy of the common law and the well-known Latin proverb “caveat emptor,” which means “buyer beware.” This proverb is frequently mentioned in previous legal precedents.

The Sale of Goods Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. S.1, The Competition Act, R.S.C. 1985, c. C-34, and The Consumer Protection Act, 2002, S.O. 2002, Chapter 30, Schedule A.
Judges have determined that the common law, in addition to the aforementioned statute laws and notwithstanding the caveat emptor principle, also includes consumer protections such as implied warranties requiring sellers to supply products appropriate for the intended purpose or for the performance of good work.
